Introduction of beacon foundation for research & Development:

Beacon Foundation for research and development (BFRD) is struggling for social change in our society.(BFRD) is non-political. Non-Government, Non –profile, Secular Development oriented Organization formed by a group of highly motivated Professionals and Volunteers. (BFRD) with the mandate to promote and facilitate their liaison. Coordination, Research   Mobilization and capacity building in order to enable them to efficiency respond to the challenges of social change and development in Pakistan.(BFRD) is established on self-basis irrespective of religion, Creed, Caste, sex and sect.(BFRD) is registered under society’s act 1860.

Activities performed during (2019-20):

 Awareness Campaign Regarding MTB (Micro Bacterium Tuberculosis) among key population / transgender / Female sex worker in Faisalabad.

 

  • Individual / group counseling session regarding T.B / HIV.
  • Awareness session regarding available service in the region related to T.B / HIV.
  • Motivation for treatment seeking behavior.
  • Linkage of MTB / HIV patients to BMUs.
  • Female sex worker provide the face marks and sanitizer.
  • Female sex worker during Provide lockdown introduce awareness Covid-19 in Faisalabad.

No. of Beneficiaries: Approximate 400-500 key population / Transgender / Female sex worker in Faisalabad during the awareness campaign.

Problem and hindrances:

 

  1. Due to unavailability of funds, could not provide condoms to TGs / FSW.
  2. Due to unavailability of funds, could not provide transgender / female sex worker in Faisalabad to visit BMU.
  3. Women during make up almost 70% of the health care workforce, exposing them to a greater risk of infection.
  4. Women also face high risks of job and income loss, and face increased risks of violence, exploitation, abuse or harassment during times of crisis and quarantine.
  5. Women expose situations exacerbate risks of violence, exploitation, abuse or harassment against women, as has been seen from previous crises and from the early case of Pakistan and Faisalabad during the COVID 19 Crisis.
  6. Over the years, sex work has shifted from Faisalabad alleys to private mansions, farmhouses, and seedy, rented apartment buildings, sprawled across the country.
  7. Hospital due to virus infection during covid-19 has been closed and damage key population.
  8. Self-isolation is a luxury that most sex workers simply cannot afford. Given business is already so dull, client attrition doesn’t just mean less work, it means less safe work
  9. Sex workers are accustomed to the pendulum swinging between feast and famine, the uncertainty of how long this lockdown may last heightens their anxieties.
  10. Corona virus is decimating the sex industry while also carrying out something of a social autopsy in economically fragile countries such as Pakistan: there is an incompatible dichotomy between hunger TB and HIV disease.
  11. On the other hand, looser quarantines and less austere measures are likely to produce wider, uncontrollable spread of contagion, especially in those nations with an already fledgling healthcare infrastructure.
  12. FSW face in terms of economical, psychological and social spheres of their lives.
  13. Unlimited resource rapid kit HIV cannot available team work. It was difficult time to handle in this situation.

    1. Behavioral change communication through outreach (includes Condom & Lubes, IEC material)
    2. Drop-In Center facility (for repeat BCC /Psycho social support & Counseling)
    3. VCCT with pre/post counseling & psychological counseling (community-based HIV testing)
    4. STI diagnosis & Treatment
    5. Condoms & lubes distribution and Career counseling and family counseling in DIC

    Defined prevention services package for FSWs:

    1. Establishment of Drop-In Centers (DIC) to deliver services address to FSWs;
    • Screening/testing of HIV
    • Syndrome Management of STIs;
    • Address for DIC center Beacon foundation For research and development (“P-21 street no-1 anwarabad opposite zubair colony jaranwala road Faisalabad ”  )
    1. Community based outreach through peer educators for behavior change;
    2. Establish condom distribution network to enhance safe sex practices
    3. Promotion of an enabling environment in the project area;
    4. Assigned targets according to the Performance Framework
    5. All Selected CBOs will be assigned targets according to the performance framework provided by BFRD ( Beacon Foundation For Research and development) the targets will be assigned against the following key components local base
    6. We identified and enrolled young women who sell sex to (BFRD) services through a network of Faisalabad and age-matched peer educators supported and directly supervised by the Sisters program outreach team.
    7. Factory Sex worker outreach in supervised team.
    8. As described in detail elsewhere peer educators are trained to build rapport with other young women who sell sex and mobilize them for HIV prevention and care services.
    9. Using a range of community mobilization activities and materials that were specifically tailored for reaching
    10. Young women who sell sex aged 25-33 Community mobilization materials included HIV prevention, condom promotion and provision, gender norms, basic financial literacy, and sexual violence prevention
    11. These materials were designed in consultation with young women who sell sex and experts, and were piloted and evaluated among a sample of young women.
    12. who sell sex using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions
    13. Peer educators were recruited in 2020-21 and worked in the BFRD program until 2020-21. Peer educators included 20 who self-identified area D-Tap, Dudi-wala, Ghulam Muhamadabad, Garibabad, Safabad, Khuriawala Nashatabad, jarawala road, Malikpur, Hariawalachowk. Susaroad, Kohinoor, Samnabad and warispura etc as female sex workers.
    14. All were 25 years old and had some secondary school education or higher. Their duties involved identifying hotspots and adolescent girls and young women through word of mouth.
    15. Hotspots included secondary schools, colleges, streets, parties, bars, and homes.
    16. Peer educators would meet with young women, talk to them.
    17. The nature of (BFRD) services and where they could access the services, and, if they were interested, give them a referral slip to be produced the first time a young woman.
    18. Who sells sex accessed (BFRD) Peer outreach was conducted between January 2020 still continuous.
